Dominic Memory System

Friday, May 20, 2005

Just recenty I've discovered the Dominic memory system, by eight time winner of the World Memory Championships Dominic O'Brien, and I've been studying his book "How to Develop a Perfect Memory". It's a very effective tool for memorizing a lot of different things, including: numbers, foreign words, lists, names and speeches.

To remember numbers in the Dominic system you must first memorize the names of 100 people who represent the numbers from 0-99, so there is some pre-work involved. Along with the names, each person also needs to have an action or object associated with them, so it could take a week or two to memorize the names and a couple of months practice to get really good with them, but the system is very powerful once you get it working. Used with the journey technique, many numbers can easily be remembered in a very short amount of time.

If you don't want to learn the number system, the journey technique itself works great and is very easy to learn.

Below is my list of numbers with associated people, the word "personal" denotes names of people who are personal friends or who aren't well known. In this system, the numbers 0 thru 9 each have a unique corresponding letter.
